How is Day of the Dead celebrated in Patzcuaro and Janitzio?

One of the most beloved festivities in Mexico is about to arrive, a day when the streets and houses are dressed in vibrant colors, marigold flowers, memories, and lots of delicious food, have you guessed what it is? That's right! What to do in Patzcuaro during Day of the Dead?

The first thing you will notice when visiting Patzcuaro on Day of the Dead is that the smell of cempasúchil and copal invade the whole place, you can see hundreds of candles illuminating the streets and visit the ofrendas placed in the main square. Spending a Day of the Dead in Patzcuaro is definitely something you have to experience, even once in your life. 

The Day of the Dead celebration in Patzcuaro begins with the preparation of the favorite foods of the deceased who will visit them that night, while in the streets, traditional music begins to play, among which the dance of the fishermen stands out. 

The dance of the fishermen in Patzcuaro is a tradition in the region, during this dance the sacred duck is hunted with a spear. Once the duck has been hunted, it is cooked to feed those who are waiting for their deceased during the early morning of November 2. Afterward, you can watch the fishermen light up the lake while rowing their rafts. 

This year the feast of the souls will be held from october 31 to 2, and you will be able to do different activities representative of the Day of the Dead in Patzcuaro, for example: 

October 31 in Patzcuaro

Everything will begin at 5:00 p.m., in the Tzurumutaro cemetery the construction of the tall one will begin, and later, the elaboration of the 18 m high arch will begin, whoever participates will be offered dinner and atole. 

At 7:00 pm the installation of the monumental altar to Vasco de Quiroga will begin, in the Vasco de Quiroga square, if you are staying at Posada Don Vasco you will be only 5 minutes away from the square, you will be able to see everything! 

At the end of the night, the floating arch installation will begin, at the general pier.

November 1st and 2nd in Patzcuaro

Everything starts with the altar and tapestry contest in Cuanajo, there will also be an altar and tomb contest in Ajuno. You will also find traditional and representative dances of the community in Tzurumurato.

On November 2 you will find the locals handing out food from the ofrendas, you can be in the main square where they will entertain the site with dance, music and much more.
